Japanese based developer, Cave has made the leap into the iPhone app world publishing it’s bullet hell sensation Espgaluda 2 for the iPhone. Unfortunetely the incredible visual intensity in this title means it only runs well on the 3GS and new generation iPod touch. For genre fans, Espgaluda 2 means an opportunity to play a top tier title without the inconvenience of importing.

Funkyball Worlds is a simple yet brilliant 2D side-scrolling platformer. Like a delicate food, Funkyball World’s may not bring anything substationally different to the genre you can never get enough of its delicious simplicity. Intrigued?
What first caught my eye on the game is the beautifully stylized graphics, and let me say the eye candy is definitely catchy. Vibrant colors and animations (such as falling leaves) flash before your eyes as your rolling your ball across the screen. To add to the fun, the game consists of three worlds to traverse through: forest, desert, and water for a total of 72 levels! Each level is unlocked by completing the previous one, and you can play over levels to improve your time and gain more gold stamps of approval. One thing’s for sure; if you’re a completionist like me you definitely won’t be putting this down in one playthrough.
There are two ways to control your ball; accelerometer and onscreen buttons. As you roll you can press and hold your finger anywhere on the screen to jump (quite handy might I say). The longer you hold, the farther you jump.
The game seems to take in account how fast you’re rolling the ball. If you speed up too much and don’t take into account the balls awkward way of movement your sure to tumble off the screen to your death A LOT. Luckily there is no penalty or limit to your deaths and even the later levels aren’t super challenging but this could all have been easily avoided if the ball controlled the way you think it should. In addition to this problem if you ever get stuck on a level or get sick of falling to your death at a particular spot there’s no way to skip the level and try your luck on a new one. Allowing the player to access up to five levels at a time or even introduce a ‘wildcard’ system akin to Torki Tori could help relieve any headaches a player is experiencing.
Though I usually use the onscreen buttons as my go to control setup I seemed to perform a little better and have more control of where the ball was going with the accelerometer. After I got past the unnatural feel of the ball, by the time I finished the game I felt exhilarated and relieved; wishing for more! If you enjoy games like these, look no further for your next purchase; Funkyball Worlds will satisfy you. Check it out.
Editors Note:This title really came completely off my radar, and the physics based platforming just works sp well with the iPhone interface, it is a game that is truly hard to put down. If you are into physics games, or platformers, make sure you check this one out. – Robert

A while back we released some information on a beautiful platformer coming up called Plushed from BlackSmith Games. We just got word that Plushed has finally been submitted! To hold you over until the games release, BlackSmith Games has released a new and final trailer:
For those not familiar, Plushed is a new take on the classic “save the princess” formula. Instead of a prince, the hero of the story is the Princess’ plush bunny. From the videos released of the game so far, Plushed seems to be a traditional 2D platformer with beautiful art, and some mini games and features that would only be possible on the iPhone.
Many are much more familiar with BlackSmith Games now, as they are the masterminds behind the extremely popular appvent calendar. The appvent calendar, for those few now familiar is a website from BlackSmith Games featuring one free iPhone game each day this month leading up to Christmas. Here is a link to the appvent calendarfor those of you who have not yet checked it out. So far there have been some very nice games including iBlast Moki, polyhedra, and Wheelers Treasure.

I am a huge Run! fan, and even now have yet to find another title in the genre that comes close. The action in Run! is very well done and the controls are spot on. For those not familiar, Run! has you trying to get a neck deprived runner as far as possible. To do this you must jump, slide, kick, and shoot your way through all kinds of crazy obstacles. 1: Beneath a Steel Sky is a cult classic PC point and click adventure game, recently ported over to the iPhone. Many argue BASS to be the best point and click adventure on the iPhone. BASS features a good ten hours of gameplay, new animated scenes from Watchmen co-creator Dave Gibbons, a remastered audio track with re-sampled voices and better quality music, and a very helpful new context sensitive hint system.

Set in a dystopian future, in BASS you follow an orphan, Robert Foster who is seized by authorities and escapes along with his sassy yet useful robot companion. Beneath a Steel Sky: Remastered was a steal and a must buy at its original full price of just $4.99, so at $0.99 the game is an incredible value.
2: Ground Effect is a super smooth and incredibly fast racer that has you behind the wheel of a ground effect vehicle. Ground effect vehicles are designed fly just above the ground or water, and in Ground Effect you are racing these vehicles at breakneck speeds. The game features a very smooth framerate and solid accelerometer or touch controls.
Ground Effect was originally priced at $2.99 and is a great value. Now at $0.99 there has never been a better time to jump in. Fans of games like Wipeout should be espescially interested in this title. We recently had an opportunity to interview Vladimir of Triple Light Games. The indie developers have recently released their first iPhone title VernX, previewed here. We will have a full review of the game coming soon, but having spent some time with the game already, I can certainly recommend you check it out. – Robert
The Current Gamer: First off can you tell me about your development team, and how you got into game development on the iPhone?
Vladimir:The team consists of my brother and I. Programming is my department while Marko takes care of everything else. We consult on certain things but for the majority of the time that’s how things go. My brother would pitch me his ideas and I would start to implement them. Certain things had to be dropped from the process, you can’t put everything in at once. I am confident that over time we will accomplish all the stuff we set out to do.
The Current Gamer: Do you guys have a background in game development and can you talk about how you got involved in developing games?
Vladimir: We have absolutely no prior history in game development. The only background I have is making windows apps in the past 6 years, so there could be some programming experience there. When I started making the engine I had no idea what I was in for. Such a radical shift from apps to games was a great challenge for me.
The Current Gamer: I am really interested to hear about your inspiration for VernX. Where did you come up with the idea?
Vladimir: It came to me in a dream …. just kidding. I started experimenting with the iPhone SDK and one thing led to another. We figured out the core game play mechanic and decided to expand from there. Our main mission was to create a game that was fun for us.
The Current Gamer: I am especially impressed with the physics in VernX. Can you talk about the engine behind it, and how that all came together?
Vladimir: The physics were a huge hurdle. The VernX Physics Engine is built from scratch, as is everything else. The development process was hugely challenging, I’ve learned a lot from this experience. Some of the toughest days of my life were spent on this game.
The Current Gamer: You have talked a bit about some planned updates for your game. Can you give us some details on what to expect?
Vladimir: We will be adding 25 new levels in our next update. (10 challenge levels, 5 sandbox levels, 10 X-levels) . That will put the total number of levels at 70. [We have additional content planned through to the end of the year.] A lite version will also be coming out, the release date will mostly depend on the approval process.
The Current Gamer: What has been your biggest challenge in launching your first game on the iPhone?
Vladimir: Media coverage has been our biggest problem. That’s not to say that it was easy to make VernX. The community is skeptical when it comes to new iPhone games, but I can’t blame them considering how much shovel-ware is released everyday.
The Current Gamer: You have been very vocal about planning updates around your users feedback, can you talk about this?
Vladimir: We try to stay objective, there’s no point in making a game that isn’t fun. I’m hoping that users can point out things that are not that obvious to us. A different opinion is something I always look forward to. The users are important to us, they have the final say.

Fans of the rogue-like genre and games have had to deal with fairly slim pickings on the iPhone to date, but thanks to Tecmo this has changed with the recent release of The Isle of 8 Bit Treasure. Similar to portable titles like Shiren The Wanderer, Izuna, and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, The Isle of 8 Bit Treasure is a classic “dungeon crawler” RPG. For those less familiar with the genre, the gameplay is turn based, and each dungeon is made of of multiple floors. To complete a dungeon the hero must fight his or her way down through multiple floors to get at the prize loot in the lowest level.
The Isle of 8 Bit Treasures boasts 60 levels, 3 playable classes, (swordsman, Witch, and Hunter) and upgradeable weapons. There is also a neat feature that lets you create your own unique weapons and dungeons using music from your iPhone. In my time spent with the game so far, I am happy to say Tecmo has made a very nice rogue-like for the iPhone, and fans of the genre especially should consider checking this one out. From what I can tell, there is no actually story to speak of, but there is plenty of content to keep you busy. Anyone who has played Izuna, or Shiren will be right at home with the interface, as well as the gameplay. So far I have enjoyed the music as well.
We will have a full review after I have had a chance to spend more time with the game, but until then, I would definetely encourage fans of the roguelike genre, as well as fans of old school classic RPGs to check this title out.
